After deciding there were too many students to feature in the Summer Musical Showcase, we dividing the classes. First and Third Years now present a Winter Showcase at the end of the second semester each year. I wanted the two showcases to be different, in order to serve our audience and students more variety of material and approach. The Winter Musical Showcase is focused on important songwriting teams and individuals in the musical theatre canon. The First Year students spend the first semester studying English diction through "simple" golden age musical theatre songs. So, I suggested we continue this study by having them focus on the works of Rodgers and Hammerstein each year for Winter Showcase. In Japan, most of the musicals that are produced and popular are very contemporary, so this will also be educational for our audiences. The Third Year students have a rotation of songwriting teams. For the First Annual Winter Musical Showcase, the Third Years focused on the works of John Kander and Fred Ebb.
Highlights of this show for me were the large groups numbers where we utilized audience space to surround friends and family with the powerful voices of our students in "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Show People", the "R&H Girls Medley" (arrangement by Stryker/Melaugh) which features five First Year students and some of Rodgers and Hammerstein's wonderful songs from female roles, and the added pas de deux in "Some Enchanted Evening."
