I had the pleasure of directing Tokyo International Players' production of Spring Awakening. We had a cast that represented six different countries and at least three different religious backgrounds. This led to some very interesting discussions about how we learned about sex and what is "right and wrong" when we were children, which inspired our process and production in many ways. The cast of youth were ever-present, seeing and hearing, as what they witness, experience, and are taught often contradict each other. They express themselves through a mixtape of contemporary song and movement that has been concealed and waiting to be set free. I worked very closely with the choreographer/assistant director, Rino Kumamoto, to infuse each song with the expressive movement of our teenage greek chorus.
