TEXITALIANS IN TOKYO
The travel bug bit me early on, growing up in a family that took regular road trips around the southern United States. With two public educators as parents, we would stop at as many educational places along the way to our final destination…sand dunes, beaches, nature centers, museums, a cool rock formation along the highway…you name it!
When I was in college, I was given the opportunity to take a semester off to sing and dance on a cruise ship. It didn’t take much convincing to get me to pack my bags and ship off to explore the world. I woke up in a new country almost every day! Trying new foods, seeing as much as I could in the few short port hours before rehearsal, and working with people from all over the world with different view points and accents in which to discuss them. I was addicted!
After finishing my degree, I went right back to ships! In fact, I hopped on and off of cruise ships for about ten years, while living in New York City and dabbling in more “grounded” theatre when I could.
On my second to last contract, I met the love of my life. He is from Italy, so travel is inherent for us. We have a little TexItalian mini-me daughter who has already been surrounded by so many cultures and languages. My teaching has brought us to Japan, and we are making the most out of our time on this new-to-us hemisphere.
I believe travel should be a life requirement. Take the leap out the door and go explore, whether it’s a new country, city, or parts of your own town that you haven’t seen yet. It may not be a house or car, but it’s an investment in your understanding of this world and your appreciation for the unknown.
We have an instagram for our adventure here in Japan. Both my husband and I are amateur photographers, so we will be posting some favorite photos from time to time. And perhaps some cultural surprises to share!
